The Art and Science of Reframing

We have all been stuck in a particular mindset where we struggle to see possibilities right in front of our faces. The more we try to find a solution or an answer, the harder it becomes when we don’t let ourselves change our thinking. What is the old definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That’s why we all need to incorporate the art of reframing into our lives.

Simply put, reframing is about finding new perspectives or angles to approach a situation. It allows you to gain insights and develop creative solutions. It doesn’t matter if you are confronted with a simple or complex situation. Reframing in all situations, from the mundane to the difficult, can give you a look into other possibilities that you may not have previously considered. Changing your frame of mind and creating new strategies will enable you to succeed. Let’s get started!

Identifying the Right Frames

No matter what situation or problem you are tackling, if you have had little to no success in the past, it may be time to look at the situation in a new, more innovative way. Reframing is changing how you view it, thus changing how you experience it. If you want to change the results you are getting, you start by changing your thoughts and reframing how you view reality. Even by making the tiniest shift, you change the meaning and behavior of the situation and how you and others observe it. Those small shifts may become major strides.

You might start by asking yourself questions such as “Is there another way to look at this problem?”, “What other factors could have contributed to these results?” or “Is there another result that may be even better?” Once you reframe the situation, you can creatively find solutions in a new, more meaningful process.

The Power of a Positive Attitude

Reframing is learning to identify negative thought processes. Even the slightest shift in how you speak or think, changing from negative self-talk to positive self-talk, increases your ability to achieve positive results. Take, for example, the simplest of thoughts: “I hate Spring because it rains all the time and makes it muddy!” Changing that thought to “I love Spring because the rain makes the grass green and the flowers bloom!” You are still having Spring, and it will still rain, but the result is seen completely differently.

A positive attitude doesn’t mean you ignore all the bad things that happen. Instead, it means that you see the best in others and put situations in a positive light. Consider a positive attitude as an investment into your future, where you bank optimism to achieve optimal results while enhancing your own skill set and resilience.

Practical Strategies for Reframing

Like any other skill, reframing may take some effort and some practice. If you practice reframing — minimizing the negatives and maximizing the positives — before long, it becomes the way you walk through life, with high expectations of positive results in your thoughts, your relationship, and your career. A few tips to start are:

1. Rethink the situation and your thought process. Determine what your negative thoughts are and why you have them. You may not even realize that some of your thoughts are negative. If you always believe that the outcome of a situation will be negative, that you focus on the bad instead of the good, or if you consider everything to be your fault, you can benefit from reframing. Rewrite your life script to center around your positive attitude.
2. Do not try to predict your future. Most people base their thoughts on historical results, so consider why you think the way you do. For example, if you spoke before a group of people and they were unresponsive in the past, you may already think that this will be the result for future settings. Instead of dwelling on the past, consider ways to engage your audience for your next session.
3. Practice. Changing your life for the better is never easy but rewarding. You must practice weeding out the negative thoughts and changing your attitude to find the positive in every situation. At first, you may have to work through each situation consciously, but before long, your reframe will be your permanent method for living effortlessly and finding success.
