Relevance is a trap most of us walk into without realizing it. We think it’s about staying visible, staying current, keeping up. We scroll, we post, we pivot when the algorithm tells us to. We consume Information and feel behind when we’re not consuming enough.
But relevance built that way burns fast. It’s borrowed. It fades, and someone else is already brighter.
Real relevance doesn’t announce itself. It just exists. Quietly. Undeniably.
The work knows what it is. Your job is to let it be that.
That’s the whole thing. Relevance isn’t something you earn by performing. It’s what happens when you stay true to what moves you and trust that it will reach who it’s meant to reach.
The ones obsessed with staying relevant spend all their energy looking over their shoulder. Checking the scoreboard. Reacting to feedback that wasn’t asked for. Sharing stories about them that no one cares to hear.
They optimize for visibility instead of resonance, and become a mirror of what everyone else is doing. As we know, mirrors don’t lead.
The ones we honor most are too busy doing work that matters to them. Work that they feel deep in their bones. Work that can’t be replicated by following a trend because it came from somewhere real.
Trends dissolve. Depth doesn’t.
I have worked with leaders who can feel the panic every time the industry shifts. They feel more exhausted and less connected to why they started in the first place.
New clients. Restructures. Layoffs. Job hunting. Retirement. It all leads to one question that keeps getting repeated:
How do I stay relevant?
Then I’ve watched others who just keep delivering and exceeding expectations. The right people still found them. Not because they were loud. Because they were clear.
One of my clients runs a company valued at over $50 billion. Sharp guy. Built something massive. But he was stuck in a loop, responding to every market shift, every competitor move, every analyst report, and his board.
He’d reshaped his internal messaging three times in eighteen months.
I asked him one question: “What would you do if no one was watching?”
He went quiet. Then he started talking about the work itself. The product. The people. The problems they were actually solving. Not the optics. Not the positioning. Just the thing that mattered when the doors were closed, and the cameras were off.
We built a framework around that. Simple.
Three anchors: What’s true. What’s ours. What endures.
Every decision, every message, every move is filtered through those three questions. No chasing. No pivoting to match the noise. Just clarity about what they were built to do and the confidence to keep doing it.
Everything started working.
The market started coming to them, with a 60% increase in their share price.
Not because they got louder. Because they got clearer. Relevance found him when he stopped hunting for it. They outperformed the market.
Clarity is magnetic. Desperation repels.
When you chase relevance, you’re playing someone else’s game. You’re letting the culture decide what’s worth your time. You’re optimizing for short-term attention instead of long-term resonance.
The cost is your voice. Your instinct. Your ability to create something that sustains.
You're not making it for a crowd. You're making it for the people who need to hear it.
That’s the shift. Stop trying to be relevant to the crowd. Start being undeniable to the few who matter.
Clarity doesn't happen by accident. It requires a way to filter what matters from what's just noise. I've written about how to build that here, a model for staying relevant without performing for it.
So forget relevance. Focus on resonance.
The work finds its people when you stop trying to find them.
